4DFrame Activity Tips:
1. Building with plans
Choose one of the finished plans and build a star, or a rocket.
KomTek in Järfalla is a Swedish science- and technology-oriented activity centre
that regularly uses 4DFrame materials in its programs both in-house and with local
schools. Anna Nytomt Kristensson is one of their staff who works with this and she
shared this set of activity tips KomTek developed (thank you, Anna!) for using this
educational teaching tool.
1. Building with plans
Choose one of the finished plans and build a star, or a rocket.
Main concepts 1-3:
- Materials to be used for making your own designs; their properties and how they
can be connected together.
- Taking documentation in the form of simple sketches, pictures and physical models.
Main concepts 4-6:
- How common everyday solid and stable structures are constructed.
- Taking documentation in the form of sketches with explanatory words and concepts,
symbols and dimensions as well as physical or digital models.
Preparation:
- Talk about different kinds of building plans and drawings. Have the students seen
things of this type before? Has anyone ever built anything from such plans?
- Look at the different types of drawings.
- Make simple drawings of, for example, simple structures made from cubic centimeter
blocks, or anything else, that are built using a few pieces.
Building with plans:
- Build a star, or a rocket.
Follow-up:
- Make your own drawings for constructions made with 4DFrame, starting with using
just a few parts.
- Discuss what is important to consider when making such a drawing.
